Last season’s climax could hardly have been more exciting. For the first time in Premier League history, the title race, relegation battle and qualification for three European competitions were all settled on the final day, with Ilkay Gündogan climbing off the bench to score twice and take the trophy back to the blue half of Manchester in dramatic fashion.

Liverpool were left to lick their wounds and collect the runners-up medals after playing their part in a brilliant battle, but Jürgen Klopp’s side drew first blood of this season with a 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend.
