Prestwich AC Wacky Races event returns to Philips Park

Wacky Races favourites Dick Dastardly, Muttley, Penelope Pitstop and The Pigeon were spotted in Prestwich on Bank Holiday Monday.

Prestwich Athletic Club (AC) hosted the inaugural Wacky Races Relay where teams of four relayed around Philips Park with “sticks of dynamite”.

Many runners converged on Sedgley Park Tigers rugby club’s site on Park Lane with some competitors joining in the wacky theme with costumes ranging from bees to bobsleighs.

The race involved teams of four each running a challenging trail route over just over a mile through Philips Park before returning to the rugby club and handing over their batons to their next team member.

They were cheered all along the route by more than 40 members of Prestwich AC.

The overall winning teams came from Manchester YMCA Harriers, Chorlton Runners and Stockport Tri Club.

The profits from the race, along with the takings from a charity cake stall, will all go to the Manchester branch of The Running Charity, which uses the power of running to help young people with complex needs and at risk of homelessness.

In total more than £1,300 was raised for the charity.

The event also received generous donations from Slattery, Code Promotional Merchandise Limited, Tesco in Prestwich, Cuckoo, That Foot Shop and members of Prestwich AC.

Prestwich AC look forward to holding the event again next year.
