Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are lending their voices to the US presidential election and calling for voter registration, a week after Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced off in their first televised debate.
In honor of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, the Sussexes released a statement through their Archewell Foundation, emphasizing the importance of Americans getting out to the polls.
“Voting is not just a right, it is a fundamental way to influence the destiny of our communities,” the statement said. “Civic engagement, regardless of political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world. By participating in initiatives like this, we want to amplify the message that every voice matters. … Together, let’s ensure that every eligible voter is informed and empowered to participate in shaping America’s future.”
The association said its team also sent personalized letters to unregistered voters using Vote Forward’s letter-writing tool to encourage them to register to vote.
Meghan Markle, the British heiress, and their two young children have been living in Markle’s native California since she stepped back from senior royal duties in early 2020. But Harry didn’t officially claim the United States as his home until April, when he filed official paperwork declaring America his new home.
News of the statement came shortly after Harry told Good Morning America that he had considered taking the plunge and obtaining U.S. citizenship, though he determined it was “not… a high priority for me right now.”
