Risking death to denounce what the world ignores
Los Altos, California: Journalist and documentary producer Kavitha Chekuru highlights recent alarming threats facing Palestinian journalists amid Israeli military actions in Gaza in a New York Times op-ed. Journalist Hossam Shabat, reporting from northern Gaza, described his harrowing life on the front line, where, days earlier, he and five other Al Jazeera journalists were baselessly accused by Israeli forces of be affiliated with activist groups. These claims, denounced by Al Jazeera, put these journalists in serious danger, even as they provide essential coverage of alleged crimes against humanity in Gaza, as described by the UN.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), this year a record 129 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza, like Sari Mansour (photo), a toll that the Gaza media office puts at 190. Five have been directly targeted, with Israel accused of constant attacks on press freedom. The United States has remained largely silent, neglecting tools like the Leahy Act that could help investigate these deaths. This silence reinforces Israeli impunity and undermines the ability of the global community to understand the reality in Gaza.
The attack on journalists recalls the case of Shireen Abu Akleh, an American citizen and journalist killed in 2022, for whom responsibility remains unclear despite widespread calls for justice. Today, it is the remaining journalists in Gaza who carry the burden of documenting the war, risking their lives every day. Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi al-Wahidi, recently shot dead by Israeli forces, is paralyzed and in a coma. He denied any medical evacuations from Gaza’s crumbling health system. His colleague Shabat pleads: “All we need is for you not to leave us alone, screaming… without anyone hearing us. » Jagjit Singh
Human War
Atlanta: To Spokesperson Ken Derow: The atrocities committed on October 7, 2023 and the fact that Gazans applauded Hamas’ promise to inflict 1,000 such days on Israelis have convinced Israeli leaders that they must achieve a decisive victory over Hamas, to be continued. by the demilitarization of Gaza and the deradicalization of the Palestinians. Yet the IDF worked very hard to avoid killing civilians in Gaza and was praised by Maj. John Spencer, head of urban warfare studies at the Modern Warfare Institute at West Point, for achieving the lowest death toll ratio between civilians and combatants never seen since fighting in a densely populated area like Gaza. While ratios as high as 9:1 have been recorded, the ratio in Gaza is closer to 5:1. This is particularly notable because Hamas’ vast network of terrorist tunnels within Gaza’s population has virtually wiped out any distinction between civilian areas and combat zones. Toby F. Block
More victims
Margate, Florida: For more than a century, anti-Zionist pogroms have demonstrated the precarious existence of the Jewish people. (“Israeli soccer fans attacked in Amsterdam, five hospitalized,” November 9). From Kishinev (1903) to Hebron (1929) via Kristallnacht (1938) and Amsterdam (2024), it is obvious that strong Jewish self-defense is a necessity to confront the maniacal violence of anti-Zionists. Staten Island: There is no way Donald Trump will win this election legitimately. It seems statistically impossible that Kamala Harris did not win a battleground state – states in which many Democrats won. Purge of voter rolls, closure of polling stations, non-extension of time spent in disaster areas, bomb threats at polling stations and bombings of ballot boxes. MAGA threats and attacks against election workers. Permanent Republican voter suppression has occurred. Elon Musk/Starlink/Putin – connect the dots. Wake up, America. Michael Rosenkrantz

Work for the best
Warwick, RI: It’s been a week since the election and with a new administration, now is the time for them to work to ensure all Americans can benefit from the transition. The coming weeks will be filled with announcements of candidates for ministerial positions and other essential administrative positions that will keep our country running smoothly. This will not be an easy task as the opposition is already gathering support to challenge any action it deems unacceptable or unworkable. Our country has always seen divisions between opposing factions, but this year they seem stronger and could possibly cause civil unrest. We must tone down the rhetoric on both sides and wait for the new Congress and the executive branch to propose their programs to reduce inflation, immigration and public safety. Compromise is needed so that both sides can agree to common solutions. Bob Sweeney

Bronx: The President of the United States from 2017 to 2021 draws up a long list of ignorance and attempts to rewrite all the mistakes made. Not recognizing your faults is something to be observed. We’ll be ready to salute a job well done, but we’ll call it like we see it. In baseball we say, “The first strike is never an out and does not end an at-bat.” » In this game, hit twice. A tired faith
Spring Lake, NJ: Greg Marotta hit the nail on the head (“Lucky Donald Wins It All Again,” editorial, November 8). I too am disappointed and disgusted that so-called religious and patriotic American voters have once again elected such an ignorant and deranged individual. I’m 75 years old and I’ve seen bad politicians, but none compare to this crook. I’m also finished. The American flag that I have waved daily for four years has fallen and my hope for a better America has evaporated. Alfred DeSantis
Borders or bust
Medford, LI: Trump must build a northern wall – and make it pay for it with tariffs! He is proposing a series of tax cuts in his first 100 days in office, and to pay for them he is considering a proposal for universal 20 percent tariffs on goods produced abroad, with an additional duty that could go up to 60% for products produced in China. . I call this a good start to financing and completing the South Wall before the mass deportation begins. But I propose that Trump go even further by raising these tariffs – particularly from China – to finance the construction of a wall on the northern border, which is becoming a growing national headache. By the end of Trump’s term in January 2029, he is expected to use what Elon Musk would call a “maniacal sense of urgency” to seal the nation’s borders once and for all against illegal immigration and the scourge drugs. Manhattan: Expect Project 2025 to be implemented very soon thanks to many Democrats and independents who couldn’t stand the idea of having a president who made mistakes in a debate (which Trump does all time) and to have a woman as president. Edward Drossman
Not supported
Boynton Beach, Florida: Spokesman Tom Saracco, like Trump and other right-wing pundits, accuses President Biden of lying to the public when he ran in 2020. In typical MAGA fashion, Saracco hits us with rhetoric alone, conveniently omitting reference to any facts to support what he says. Wouldn’t it be shocking if a MAGA supporter, or even Trump himself, occasionally presented facts to back up what they say instead of always taking us on a fact-less one-way ticket to La La rhetoric Land?
