Boston selected David Ortiz’s son, D’Angelo, with its 19th-round pick (567th overall) in the 2024 MLB draft on Tuesday.

D’Angelo Ortiz, 20, is a third baseman/infielder who last played at Miami Dade Community College in Kendall, Fla.

A 6-foot-1 right-handed hitter, Ortiz played in 51 games for Miami Dade CC last season, batting .377 with one home run, seven doubles and 35 RBIs.

Young Ortiz spent most of his childhood with the Red Sox. He was born just over three months before his father and the 2004 Red Sox ended an 86-year championship drought. He went on to attend Westminster Christian High School in Palmetto Bay, Florida.

Ortiz is no stranger to baseball in the Boston area, though. In two of the last three summers, Ortiz has played for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate League, batting .311, with seven RBIs and four stolen bases in 11 games so far this season.

During the 2022 season with Brockton, D’Angelo played on the same Rox team with the sons of former Red Sox stars Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez and Keith Foulke. Now, Ortiz will have the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps on the road to Fenway Park.
