U.S. Representative John Katko’s abrupt decision Friday to resign from Congress by the end of the year has sent shock waves through the political world of central New York and changed the dynamics of the 2022 election.

The race for Congress is now wide open to both Republicans and Democrats, and some in the GOP wasted no time Friday in contacting party officials to submit a bid for the open seat, local elected officials and party leaders said.
