Roman Anthony has had a meteoric rise in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) this year.

He put on a show and won the inaugural MLB All-Star Futures Skills Showcase in July. Less than a month later, Anthony was promoted to Triple-A Worcester after playing fewer than 100 total games at Double-A Portland. Then, earlier this month, the 20-year-old was named MLB’s top prospect by Baseball America.

To top it off, with one game remaining in Worcester’s regular season, Anthony owns a 1.000 OPS after 34 games with the club.

To say he excelled at the highest level of MiLB would be an understatement.

The outfielder has been the WooSox’ leadoff hitter since his promotion. In that role, Anthony has consistently proven why he’s the top prospect in baseball. He’s hitting .352 at Triple-A with a .469 on-base percentage.

Worcester manager Chad Tracy recently praised Anthony and gave some insight into what it’s like to coach one of baseball’s top budding stars.

“He’s really, really good, we’re talking about the best prospect in baseball,” Tracy said earlier this week. “He’s really good, a really good defender, he plays all three outfield positions, he can hit, he can hit with power, he can hit line drives.”

“He’s a good player. So guys like that, you bring him in here, you get him in the lineup, you teach him little things as you go. We try to teach him all the little things that are going to come up in the big leagues.”

The Red Sox’s 79th overall pick in 2022 has homered 33 times, walked 30 times and driven in 20 runs since being promoted Aug. 11. Anthony has stolen five bases and recorded 15 extra-base hits during that span, proving to be a threat on the bases against other top MLB prospects.

On Friday against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, he gave up four walks in Worcester’s 4-1 victory to kick off what could be the team’s final series of the season. Then on Saturday, he drove in the first run of the WooSox’s 4-3 victory with an RBI single in the third inning.

Although Anthony has only played a single month of games in Triple-A, it’s easy to imagine what he’ll look like if he contributes to Boston’s major league club. With nine games remaining on the Red Sox schedule and their playoff hopes all but dashed, the team could give Anthony a taste of the big leagues while the stakes aren’t high.

Whether he debuts this year or next, Boston fans can envision a bright future for the Red Sox with a shining star in Anthony.
