German police are searching for a suspect who killed and injured several people at a music festival in Solingen on Friday night, investigators said.
The “Diversity Festival” took place all weekend to celebrate Solingen’s 650th anniversary, according to festival organizers.
Tim Kurzbach, the mayor of Solingen, posted a message on Facebook saying the city was shocked, scared and deeply saddened.
“We all wanted to celebrate our city’s anniversary together and now we have to mourn the dead and injured. It breaks my heart that an attack took place in our city. I have tears in my eyes when I think of those we have lost. I pray for all those who are still fighting for their lives,” he said in a message written in German.
“To all those who witnessed these terrible images, my deepest condolences. I thank all the security and emergency forces for their service. I ask you, if you believe, to pray with me and if you do not believe, to hope with me,” he added.
