Sevilla claim deal to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United would be cheaper than expected

Sevilla chief Monchi claims a deal to sign Anthony Martial ‘would be cheaper than you think’ as the club plan talks with Manchester United forward at the end of the season despite his injury-hit loan

  • Anthony Martial has made only 11 appearances during his loan spell at Sevilla
  • The Manchester United forward left Old Trafford in search of more game time
  • Sevilla sporting director Monchi said the door was not closed to a permanent deal
  • Monchi revealed the club would discuss Martial’s future at the end of the season

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has refused to rule out a move to sign Manchester United outcast Anthony Martial on a permanent transfer despite his troubled loan spell, claiming a deal would be ‘cheaper than you think’.

Martial signed for the La Liga side until the end of the season in January after becoming frustrated with his lack of game time at Old Trafford but his short stay in Spain has been plagued by injuries.

The 26-year-old Frenchman has made just 11 appearances for Sevilla since joining on loan from United and scored only one goal.

Martial has also been regularly whistled and jeered by Sevilla fans during his short stay in Spain.

Monchi, however, has said he is ‘not closing the door’ on Martial remaining with Sevilla beyond the end of his loan.

The former goalkeeper also suggested a deal for the French international will not be as expensive as some might have envisaged – despite Martial being under contract at United until June 2024.

‘His transfer was cheaper than you think, but it’s still a big bet, just six or seven million,’ Monchi told Radio Sevilla.

‘Unfortunately, it is difficult to analyze Martial’s performance when he was injured and now he is injured again.

‘I’m not closing the door on his continuity although there’s a lot to see and discuss with the player at the end of the season.’

Martial could be part of a significant exodus from Old Trafford in the summer as United look to rebuild following another torrid campaign.

Erik ten Hag, who is expected to be confirmed as the new United manager in the coming days, will be aiming to strengthen his forward line in the upcoming transfer window.

As well as Martial, there are question marks surrounding the futures of Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Reports last month claimed United were exploring the possibility of including Martial as part of a deal to lure Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane to the club.
