Simone Biles This week, she proved once again why she is considered the greatest gymnast of all time, becoming the first American gymnast to win the Olympic individual all-around twice. And as she and the world celebrated her achievements, she also posted a comment on social media that appeared to take a dig at former President Donald Trump.
“I love my black job,” she tweeted Friday, reposting images of herself showing off her gold medal and silver “GOAT” necklace.
It’s a reference to something Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, said during his June debate against President Biden and reiterated in an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference on Wednesday, a day before Biles wins individual all-around.
Speaking to ABC News reporter Rachel Scott at the conference, Trump was asked to explain his misleading claim that “millions and millions of people” crossing the U.S.-Mexico border are “working in jobs that are reserved for black people.”
When Scott asked what a “black job” was, Trump replied: “A black job is anybody who has a job. They’re taking black people out of jobs.”
Since his first remarks during the debate, social media users have commented on what “black jobs” are and shared some examples.
One physician, for example, posted a video of herself “heading to my black job” on June 28, declaring that “black pediatricians are awesome,” while a general surgery resident posted a photo of herself in hospital scrubs, captioned “me at my black job.”
Some politicians have also followed the trend. “Donald Trump is about to discover that the presidency of the United States is a job reserved for black people,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said on July 22, alongside a photo of himself and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump’s comments in Wednesday’s interview have renewed attention.
“You know what a black job is? It’s vice president of the United States of America,” Jessica Tarlov, host of Fox News’ “The Five,” said after his remarks.
“Fun fact: Donald Trump took a black job when he succeeded Obama, but was later fired,” tweeted Alex Cole, a reporter for Newsitics.
Trump has not responded to Biles’ comments.
