Student Returning to Class After Georgia School Shooting Describes Gunfire He Heard: ‘It Didn’t Seem Real’

One day after a Georgia school shooting The incident left four people dead and nine injured, and Apalachee High School students are left to cope with the losses.

Isaac Sanguma, a student at the school, told CBS Mornings that he was walking back to class when the shooting happened and didn’t realize at first that the sounds he heard were gunshots.

“I think I heard a ‘boom boom,’ but at first it didn’t sound like a gunshot, I didn’t think it was a gunshot,” Sanguma said. “My instincts just told me to go back to class.”

Sanguma said the terrifying moment “didn’t seem real.”

The victims were identified as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Aspinwall and Irimie were both math teachers, according to the school’s website.

The suspect was identified as Colt Gray, 14, a student at the school, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He was taken alive. The alleged shooter will be charged with murder and “treated” as an adult, GBI Director Chris Hosey said. Gray is currently being held at the Gainesville, Georgia, area youth detention center, a spokesperson for the state Department of Juvenile Justice told CBS News.

More than a year ago, Georgia police questioned Graythen 13, about reports of online posts threatening a school shooting. Gray denied the allegations. His father was also interviewed and said he had hunting guns in their home, but his teenage son did not have “unsupervised access to those weapons,” the FBI in Atlanta said.

Authorities have not said how Gray acquired the weapon used in Wednesday’s shooting.

Tribute to the victims

One of the victims, Irimie, was Sanguma’s math teacher. He said he spoke to her on Wednesday morning and that she encouraged him to arrive to class on time. He also said she told “cheesy jokes” and was kind.

“I didn’t know it would be the last time I would see her and speak to her,” he said.

The first-year high school student described Irimie as a welcoming person and said she always works to give students confidence.

“I can’t believe that my teacher, someone I see every day… it doesn’t seem real to me.”
