A rescued puppy named Zuri has melted hearts on social media after her owner shared a clip of her seemingly heartbroken reaction to seeing her dad leave the house, in contrast to that of her brother Zane, who has been with the couple since he was a puppy.
In the heartwarming clip, shared on TikTok in June under the username zanethedoberman, Zuri the Staffy can be seen watching her owner leave through the window, looking miserable as if she can’t wait for him to return.
Meanwhile, Zane sleeps peacefully on the couch right next to her, undisturbed by his owner’s departure, continuing his nap as if nothing had happened.
A caption shared with the clip reads: “The dog I picked up off the street every time my husband left the house compared to the dogs he raised since they were eight weeks old.”
Each year, 6.3 million pets enter shelters in the United States, an average of 17,260 per day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats in animal shelters reached 46,807 in January 2023, an increase of 1,744 from January 2022, according to the 24Pet “Shelter Watch” report.
According to the Michigan-based Humane Society of Macomb, the most common reasons a dog is surrendered are age, allergies, behavioral issues, cleaning, cost, moving, new pets and shedding.
Each year, approximately 920,000 abandoned animals are euthanized. Shelters work to reduce euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spay/neuter programs and behavioral rehabilitation.
The video quickly went viral on social media, attracting viewers from all over TikTok. It has so far received over 742,100 views and 44,600 likes on the platform.
One user, Karla Nabert, commented: “The Doberman knows he’s coming back because he still has the other one, but not because someone has betrayed that trust.”
Holly said: “Rescued people cling to the good things in their lives because they know what it’s like not to have them.”
SmolPom added: “We rescued a male husky this year. We’ve had him for a little over two months…my heart breaks hearing him and watching him on camera when we’re gone…he’s slowly learning that we’re coming back but it’s hard.”
