A 14-year-old boy has been charged with bringing a loaded gun into a high school in west suburban Lombard on Tuesday.
A student at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., told a security guard he found a loaded 9 mm handgun in the boys’ restroom around 2:15 p.m., according to the DuPage County District Attorney’s Office.
Lombard police found the gun at another student’s home in Glendale Heights, prosecutors said. The teen was questioned and arrested on suspicion of bringing the gun into the school.
The teenager was charged with unlawful use of a weapon in a school and possession of a firearm by a minor.
“I want to commend the student who did the right thing and brought this matter to the attention of the authorities,” said DuPage County District Attorney Robert Berlin.
“As the school year begins, I want to make one thing clear: DuPage County law enforcement, school staff and our residents have zero tolerance for the type of behavior alleged in this case. Additionally, any threats of violence, real or perceived, will be taken very seriously, thoroughly investigated and, if charges are warranted, prosecuted.”
A judge ordered the teenager to be remanded in custody and to appear in court on September 16.
