Part of the TGI Fridays restaurant chain has been bought by private equity firms Calveton and Breal Capital in a deal that will save 51 of the chain’s 87 restaurants. But it is estimated that despite the sale, there will be more than 1,000 layoffs.
Teneo’s co-administrators said restaurants not included in the sale were closed immediately, resulting in the loss of 1,012 jobs.
The sale came as a shock to areas of the business that are at risk of closure. Reports earlier today from hospitality industry union Unite Hospitality said staff had been locked out of venues and locks had been changed. Meanwhile, there have been no warnings about potential layoffs or consultations with the chain’s employees.
Unite tweeted that workers were “invited to a zoom call to head office with one hour’s notice.” Many members did not even receive the invitation.”

Julie McEwan, the company’s UK managing director, said: “Today’s news marks the start of a positive future for our business following a very difficult period for the casual dining sector in its together. We look to the future with confidence that the TGI Fridays brand will continue to attract loyal and new customers.
“We are devastated for our colleagues who will be leaving TGI and we thank them for their loyalty and contribution during their time with us. We are doing everything we can to retain our team and support those affected,” she added.
