The story behind the woman inspired by the club’s name reads, according to the much-loved London bar: “Gloria always had the wildest parties. She had the best legs in Soho. Some say she dated Hendrix. She showed Bowie how to do her make-up. “She owned a notorious b & b in Covent garden. When she ran out of dosh, she moved into the basement.”

The Meating Place was a much-loved steakhouse in the city that was suddenly forced to close after eight years in 2018 due to a “loss of tenancy”. Specializing in meat skewers and steaks, it was always a hit among locals and visitors, and at the time of the closure, the CEO said in a statement: “It is with regret and a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our beloved restaurant, The place to eat.
“However, the time has come to close the doors and move out to new pastures due to the landlord holding back the lease renewal to further develop the property.
“We have loved being here and thank each and every one of you who have dined with us over the years – we leave with fond memories of this place, and we hope you do too.”
