The size of the slim Republican majority in the House of Representatives depends on five uncalled elections

Republicans hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives, although the extent of that narrow margin won’t be known until after the last five indecisive elections are called.

The five House races that remain uncalled as of Wednesday morning are in Alaska, California, Iowa and Ohio. The balance of power is currently 218 seats for the Republicans and 212 for the Democrats.

Alaska

General District

Democratic incumbent representative Mary Sattler Arables is in a tight race in Alaska’s at-large congressional district, where she is behind Republican contractor Nick Begich.

As of Wednesday morning, Begich held a little more than 2 points in advance with 48.6% of the vote, compared to 46.2% for Peltola. The vote count is between 157,331 and 149,763, with 99% of votes counted.

California

About 96% of the votes have been counted and Duarte holds a slim lead of 50.1% to 49.9%. The two candidates are separated by only 227 votes.

45th congressional district

Democratic challenger Derek Tran took over incumbent Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in the 45th District. Steel was leading by a few hundred votes late last week, but Tran now has a razor-thin lead of 314 votes.

Around 97% of the votes were counted for the constituency.

Bohannan requested a recount in his attempt to unseat Miller-Meeks. The Associated Press has not yet called the race because the margin was close enough to prompt a recount. Miller-Meeks declared victory and said she was confident in her lead.

Ohio

9th Congressional District

Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur leads her Republican challenger, Derek Merrin, by less than half a point with 99% of the votes counted. Kaptur’s lead stands at just 833 votes, with 99% of the votes counted as of Wednesday morning.
