MELBOURNE, Australia — A tiger bit an animal keeper on the arm at an Australian theme park on Monday, authorities said.
The woman was taken by ambulance from Dreamworld in Coomera, Queensland, to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, Queensland Ambulance Service chief Justin Payne said.
Staff managed the bleeding as an ambulance was called to Dreamworld shortly before 9am, Payne said. The theme park opens to the public at 10am.
“We were informed that at that location a 47-year-old woman, an experienced trainer, had been bitten by one of the tigers,” Payne said.
“The patient had clearly suffered severe lacerations and puncture wounds from the animal. She was quite pale and not feeling well, but was generally doing well,” Payne added.
Dreamworld says on its website that it has nine Sumatran and Bengal tigers in its Tiger Island exhibit.
The amusement park, which features rides and animal exhibits, described the attack in a statement as an “isolated and rare incident” that would be investigated.
