Washington — The senator. J.D. Vance of the governor of Ohio and Minnesota. Tim Walz — both relative newcomers to the national political scene — face off Tuesday in the only vice-presidential debate scheduled before the November election.
The debate comes three weeks after former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris met. their only planned debate.
Waltzwho is Harris’ running mate, had a long political career but was largely unknown to voters outside of Minnesota before joining the Democratic ticket.
Vancethe author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” was first elected in 2022, less than two years before being chosen by Trump to be his running mate.
Here’s what you need to know about the debate.
What time will the vice presidential debate start and end?
The debate begins at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday. It will last 90 minutes – the same length as the two presidential debates – and end at 10:30 p.m. ET.
Who moderates the VP debate?
Norah O’Donnell, anchor and editor of “CBS Evening News,” and Margaret Brennan, moderator of “Face the Nation” and chief foreign affairs correspondent, will moderate the debate.
Where is the VP debate?
The debate takes place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York.
Trump always resided in New York, a Democratic stronghold, before changing his policies. registration on the electoral lists and main residence in 2019 in Palm Beach, Florida, where his Mar-a-Lago club is located.
Trump insisted at a recent campaign event on Long Island that he could win New York this year, despite losing the state by more than 20 points to President Biden in 2020.
“When I said to some people in Washington, ‘I’m going to New York, we’re making a campaign speech,’ they said, ‘What do you mean New York? You can never, no one can win .’ I can’t win. I said, ‘I can win New York, and we can win New York,'” Trump said.
What are the rules of debate?
The two campaigns agreed to a 90-minute debate with two four-minute commercial breaks. Campaign staff are not allowed to interact with candidates during breaks.
There will be no hearing – a measure also implemented during the previous two presidential debates.
At the start of the event, moderators will introduce the candidates in order of incumbent party, with Walz coming first. There will be no opening statements.
Walz will stand behind the lectern on the left side of the stage, which will be on the right side of the spectators’ screens. Vance will be at the podium on the right side of the stage, but on the left side of the screens.
Contestants, who cannot bring pre-written notes or props on stage, will have two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. They will have one minute to refute. At the discretion of the moderators, candidates may be granted an additional minute to continue a discussion.
Unlike presidential debates, a candidate’s microphone will not be muted when their opponent speaks, but CBS News reserves the right to turn off microphones.
Vance won a virtual coin toss on Thursday, choosing to go second with his final statement. Each candidate will have two minutes for their closing speech.
No topics or questions will be shared with campaigns in advance.
