Tom Ford Gets “More Personal” with Second Edition of Best-Selling Book

When you think of Tom Ford, glamour, sensuality and style come to mind. Whether it’s creating clothing for the global marketplace, taking the beauty world by storm or writing and directing award-winning films, Ford’s legacy and influence are unmatched. Now more than a decade after his best-selling debut book Tom Ford was released, highlighting his time as Creative Director of Gucci (a position now held by Alessandro Michele), Ford is back with Tom Ford 002 to showcase and celebrate his life’s work. “The images in this book are more personal [than his first] because they are purely my own brand,” he explains. “You really get to give the world your taste once, and hopefully the world likes it.”

As most fashion designers will tell you, they tend to focus on what’s next, whether it be a forthcoming collection or looking for inspiration, a concept that Ford reflects on across 416 pages. “The minute I turn my back on the runway, I start thinking ‘What am I going to do now? What am I going to do next?’” Ford continues. “I had not taken that time to look back and think ‘What have I done for the last 15 years?’ I often think I haven’t done enough or haven’t achieved enough…Looking back, I was happy with what I accomplished. It brings back very personal memories about where I was, what I was doing, what my taste was at the time – it was very cathartic” said Ford.

After leaving Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent in 2004, Ford thought he’d retire from fashion. But soon “realized very quickly that I was missing having a voice in contemporary culture but I didn’t feel I was ready to jump back in,” he says. Instead of solely focusing on fragrance, cosmetics and eyewear Ford saw a niche in the market for menswear, an empire was born and the rest is history.

Tom Ford 002 takes the reader through a glamour-filled journey of all things Tom Ford, featuring previously unpublished images ranging from 2005 to the present day. Throughout the time, storied photographers like Steven Klein, Inez and Vinoodh, Nick Knight and Mert & Marcus capture the essence of the brand. Brimming with celebrities, the book will have you chanting Jay-Z’s unforgettable “Tom Ford,” named for the designer — which Ford maintains is still one of his most surreal moments.
