Tori Spelling has set the record straight about her delay in publicly commenting on the death of her friend and former co-star Shannen Doherty earlier this month.
The actress spoke about the confusion her alleged heist caused among fans, with some even wondering if the couple were friends after all.
The 51-year-old first met Doherty, who died on July 13, while filming the movie. Beverly Hills, 90210 15-year-old pilot, the latter was two years older. Speaking at her first spelling mistake podcast in more than two weeks, Spelling has put online an episode dedicated to the late Heathers favorite, titled “Miss Rebel,” yesterday.
Fifteen minutes into the special episode, Spelling explained how she received the tough news and why she waited to share her “F*** them” tribute via Instagram.
Spelling explained that it was very difficult to write and upload the message: “I talked to a friend who said, ‘Do it at your own pace… Handle it your way, nobody expects anything from you.'”
“I wish it was true. I looked on social media and took a day before posting, because my thoughts were all over the place and I wanted it to be fair.”
Spelling said she “didn’t want to rush out and say, ‘Oh, look, see how much I loved Shannen. I immediately put out a post with a picture of us.'”
The star added: “That day I saw comments like, ‘Oh, I thought Tori and Shannen were friends; Tori didn’t post anything. Maybe they weren’t friends.’
Spelling said: “I had to tell myself: This is just outside noise, let it go. [but] It has seeped in.”
She continued: “I think Shannen would have been very proud of the message I posted. I would have mentioned a few more points if I really wanted to please her.
“That was really me, that’s all she ever told me to be,” Spelling said.
His online tribute to his 1.8 million followers recalled his first meeting with Doherty and has since been liked more than 270,000 times.
Spelling recounted how the “rebel” Doherty took her under his wing, and they quickly became best friends.
Spelling concluded: “I will remain a rebel for you. I love you with all my heart. Always.”
Doherty’s cause of death was breast cancer, which returned in 2020 at stage 4, five years after she was first diagnosed with the disease.
