Tragedy when a man was found dead in the river Irwell

A man’s body has been discovered in the Irwell River in a rural area of ​​Bury.

Police officers and firefighters were called to Waterside Road in Summerseat near Ramsbottom around 10 a.m. this morning (November 16).

Roads in the area were blocked off and remained blocked through the early afternoon while an investigation was launched into the cause of the man’s death.

Greater Manchester Police said the man was “in his 50s”.

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: “Police were called just before 10.30am this morning (Tuesday, November 16th) for reports of a person in the Irwell River off Waterside Road, Ramsbottom.

“Officers attended and unfortunately found the body of a man believed to be in his 50s.

“Police are still on the scene and investigations are underway to identify the man and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.”

A spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “Just before 10.30am on Tuesday 16 November, two fire trucks from Bury and Ramsbottom, a technical response unit and water incident unit, participated in reports of a person in the water at Waterside Road.

“Crews supported colleagues from the GMP on site and were present for just under two hours.”
