Rep. Elise Stefanik will be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations when Donald Trump becomes the country’s 47th president in January.
Trump confirmed Monday that the representative from upstate New York’s 21st District will serve in his Cabinet after being confirmed by a Republican-led Senate.
The Republican Party took back the Senate last week in the wake of Trump’s election victory.
Stefanik, 40, would succeed President Biden’s ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, in the role. One of the people who held this position during Trump’s previous presidency was Nikki Haley, who challenged him for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2024. The new president has made it clear that she will not be part of his second administration.
Stefanik has remained steadfast in her loyalty to Trump. The Albany native told NBC News earlier this year that she would not commit to certifying the presidential election if Trump lost. She also expressed sympathy for the people who stormed the capital on January 6 during this interview.
“I am concerned about the treatment of the January 6 hostages,” Stefanik said.
She also spoke at Trump’s controversial Madison Square Garden rally shortly before the election, during which a comedian called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”
Stefanik has become an outspoken critic of anti-Semitism on college campuses throughout the war between Israel and Hamas, which began when the Gaza-based terror network attacked Israeli civilians on October 7. She also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of this and other issues.
Stefanik was 30 when she was elected to Congress in 2014. No woman had won the office younger. She currently serves as a senior member of the Armed Services Committee.
Trump announced Sunday that former ICE Director Tom Homan would join the Trump administration as “border czar.”
