Trump wins Nevada, capturing a state he lost in 2016 and 2020 – NBC Chicago

President-elect Donald Trump carried Nevada over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race, NBC News projects.

Trump lost all six of the state’s electoral votes in his two previous White House campaigns. But those losses to Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden were both by less than 2.5 percentage points, and Trump and the Republican Party have since made significant gains with Latino voters and other key voting blocs in the state .

While Nevada elected a Republican governor in 2022 — Trump-backed Joe Lombardo — Democrats have managed to hold on in other close races up and down the ballot, a recurring theme in recent years. But Trump’s victory is a major step forward for the Republican Party in a state that Democrats have dominated of late. The Republicans had not won the presidential election there since 2004.

Trump has made Las Vegas a frequent stop on his campaign trail, repeatedly promoting his “no tax on tips” pledge, in a state where a significant number of residents work for tipped wages in the entertainment and entertainment industries. of the hotel industry. Trump announced the proposal at a campaign rally in Las Vegas in June.

Harris also stood by him and encouraged his support during her visits to the state, including in August, when she touted the support of people like the powerful Culinary Union. Harris also visited Las Vegas several times after becoming a Democratic candidate this summer.

Trump won Nevada after six Republican “fake electors” were indicted last year on forgery charges for allegedly submitting fake certificates to Congress declaring Trump the winner in the state four years ago. A Nevada judge threw out the case in June 2024, ruling it was filed in the wrong place. Nevada Attorney General, Democrat Aaron Ford, appealed the decision in July.

Nevada relies heavily on mail-in voting, which Trump and his Republican allies opposed in the 2020 election and since. But the party has made a more concerted effort this year to encourage voters to vote by mail, with Trump urging his supporters to vote by any means possible.
