Two deaths confirmed in Unicoi and Johnson counties following Hurricane Helene

At least two people have died in eastern Tennessee due to the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, authorities announced September 29.

One death was confirmed in Unicoi County and the other in Johnson County.

“We expect that number to change,” spokesman Myron Hughes of the Unicoi County Emergency Management Agency said at a 5 p.m. news conference.

Many East Tennessee communities remain underwater and face crumbling roads, unstable bridges and devastated utility networks. The remnants of Hurricane Helene brought rivers to record highs and forced evacuations.
