New video obtained by ABC News shows UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s assassin waiting moments before shooting Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel last week.
The video shows other bystanders, then, when the masked gunman sees Thompson, he runs across the street and opens fire.
The video, which has not been seen publicly before, appears to support the police account that the shooter targeted Thompson in the Wednesday morning attack because he was loitering while others were strolling.
Police have not established a motive, but said they have uncovered no evidence to show the killing had anything to do with Thompson’s private life.
The unidentified suspect appears to have carefully planned his movements, but law enforcement is “on the right track,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams told ABC station New York on Sunday. WABC.
“Like I said, the net closes and closes,” Adams said. “It was an extremely difficult investigation. A completely masked person. The amount of detective work it took to put the pieces together – we feel like we’re getting closer and closer.”
The FBI is participating in the nationwide manhunt, according to law enforcement sources.
NYPD detectives arrived in Georgia this weekend. Investigators said the suspect arrived in New York on Nov. 24 aboard a bus from Atlanta, although it is unclear whether his trip began in Atlanta.
The masked gunman shot Thompson at point-blank range at 6:44 a.m. Wednesday outside the Hilton Midtown in New York, where Thompson’s company was holding an investor conference. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the attack “brazen” and “targeted.”
Right after the shooting, the suspect fled on a bicycle through Central Park toward the Upper West Side. He then took a taxi to the Port Authority bus facility on 178th Street and boarded a bus from New York, according to police.
New York Police officials released new images over the weekend of the suspect in the back of a taxi, where he could be seen peering through the open slider in the partition between the seats. Another photo emerged showing the man walking outside a taxi window.
In New York on Sunday, members of the NYPD dive team searched underwater in Central Park near the Bethesda Fountain.
Adams declined Sunday to comment on specific evidence, saying only that “every piece is important.” And he spoke generally about the ongoing underwater research.
“Everywhere is important. Everywhere is important,” Adams said, adding a moment later: “It’s dark out there, you know.”
The suspect’s backpack – with a jacket and Monopoly money inside – was found near Central Park. Police have yet to find the distinctive weapon used in the shooting.
“I don’t want to do anything that’s going to make him realize that we’re hot on his trail, but we feel really good about where we are,” Adams said Sunday. “Finding the backpack, taking the photos of the taxi, looking at some of the evidence that we have, we feel really good about where we are.”
