Van de Beek and Rashford start – Expected line-up from Manchester United vs Chelsea – George Smith

Manchester United will build on Tuesday night’s 2-0 Champions League triumph over Villarreal when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

United – who are unbeaten in their last five home visits to the reigning European champions – will hope to reach two victories out of two under the guidance of caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who will soon be replaced by future Germans. Ralf Rangnick.

Carrick, who saw his team get the job done in Spain thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, will not be under illusions about how difficult the trip to west London will be, with Chelsea currently at the top of the Premier League table with 29 points to their name.

The former midfielder’s starting line-up in the capital will certainly prove to be interesting to say the least, and it is possible that he could adjust his system and squad to cope with the challenges posed by Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Left-back Luke Shaw and midfielder Fred may miss concussions and ankle injuries respectively, while Raphael Varane (hoarding) and Paul Pogba (thighs) remain on the sidelines.

Although Carrick may have some difficult decisions to make, David de Gea is a sure starter in the goal. Although he only has three clean sheets to show for his efforts during this period, the Spaniard has been in solid form.

The four backs, who kept their first clean sheet in their Champions League campaign on Tuesday night, will see at least one change made where Harry Maguire is not available for selection. The United captain was sent off against Watford last weekend and is due to serve a one-match quarantine. With Varane also on the sidelines, it is likely that Eric Bailly will partner Victor Lindelof on central defense.

As Shaw is still struggling with a concussion, Alex Telles may well continue on left back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka will fill the right-back position.

Carrick, who spoke on Friday, confirmed it would be a pending game in terms of Fred’s availability. He managed to run through the pain by twisting his ankle against Villarreal, meaning it could bolster United’s hopes of having him available and clear the cut.

If he does, he will most likely join Scott McTominay at the bottom of midfield, where United are likely to offer as much back-fire protection as possible. If he fails to do so, Donny Van de Beek could move into a deeper role, as a partnership with McTominay, opening the way for Bruno Fernandes to return to the starting lineup.

If Fred gets ready, Carrick could face a difficult decision between Van de Beek and Fernandes in terms of the battle for No. 10 spot.

In the attack, another change is likely, with Marcus Rashford with a strong chance to return to the starting lineup at the expense of Anthony Martial. Rashford stepped off the bench against Villarreal and played a hand in Sancho, beating United’s second.

Rashford would join Sancho and Ronaldo in the top three, lined up on the left wing.
