Welsh Labour Party reveals when Vaughan Gething’s replacement as First Minister will be elected | UK News

The Welsh Labour Party has set out a timetable for the election of its new leaders and a new First Minister of Wales.

Wales will have a new first minister by mid-September, Welsh Labour has announced.

The party has set a timetable for replacing Vaughan Gething after his resigned on Tuesday.

He announced his resignation after four members of his government resigned in protest against his leadership.

Nominations for the vacancies open on Saturday evening and the party’s Senedd MPs have until midday on Wednesday to decide who they will support for the top job.

The list of potential candidates will be announced this afternoon and confirmed on August 19.

Postal votes will be sent out starting August 22 and voting will close on September 13.

A new Welsh Labour leader will be announced on September 14.

When Mr Gething resigned he said he would remain in office until his replacement was appointed, and he will face his final Prime Minister’s Questions on September 17.

The election of the new prime minister will take place on September 18.

No Labour member of the Senedd (MS) has officially declared that they will stand in the party leadership race.

Jeremy Miles, who was one of the Four government ministers resign Tuesday, is among those expected to show up.

Other names in the running include Climate Change Secretary Huw Irranca-Davies, Health Secretary Eluned Morgan and Transport Secretary Ken Skates.

Mr Gething’s leadership collapse came after Labour cabinet ministers Mick Antoniw, Julie James, Lesley Griffiths and Jeremy Miles all of them left their government poststelling the Prime Minister that they could not continue their work “without your resignation.”

Mr Gething made history in March when he became the first black leader of a European country, succeeding Mark Drakeford as first minister of Wales.
