Organic carrots and celery sold at Whole Foods Market in five states are being recalled. deadly outbreak of E. coli which struck 39 people in 18 states.
The recall, issued Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration, involves 15-ounce containers of Whole Foods Market brand organic carrot sticks and organic carrot and celery sticks sold at Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho and Nevada, according to the announcement from F&S Fresh Foods, based in Sacramento, California.
F&S initiated the recall after being informed by a local supplier, Grimmway Farms, of potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The advisory comes just days after a nationwide recall of several brands of whole and baby organic carrots.
Federal authorities are investigating the E. coli, which killed one person and led to the hospitalization of at least 15 people.
The F&S recall involves carrots and celery sold in plastic clamshells marked with the letters “GH” followed by three numbers ranging from 236 to 284, and expiration dates ranging from September 1, 2024 to October 19, 2024. Although they are no longer sold in stores, the products may still reside in people’s refrigerators or freezers.
E. coli bacteria can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young people, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
