Viewers watching the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight may have heard a lot of debate from the announcers as they watched the boxing legend bite his glove repeatedly during the highly anticipated fight.
While some speculated that biting was a habit Tyson had displayed for years, even in previous boxing matches, others wondered if there was a problem with his mouthpiece.
Tyson settled the debate after the fight Friday, saying he “bites” when he fights.
“I have a biting fixation,” he said.
The comment recalled the time the Hall of Famer bit Evander Holyfield’s ear during a 1997 fight.
Tyson, 58, made his return to the ring on Friday as he took on YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul, 27, but ultimately failed to secure victory.
The fight was not close according to the judges’ cards, with one giving Paul an 80-72 advantage and the other two calling it 79-73.
Tyson came after Paul immediately after the opening bell and landed a few quick punches, but didn’t try much else the rest of the way.
Even fewer rounds and shorter rounds couldn’t do much to generate action for a 58-year-old in his first sanctioned professional fight in nearly 20 years, facing a boxing neophyte with the hope to challenge for championships somewhere in the future.
It was the first sanctioned fight since 2005 for Tyson. Paul started fighting a little over four years ago.
Yet when asked after the loss if this would be Tyson’s last time in the ring, Tyson surprised many by replying, “I don’t think so.”
