Woman, 23, charged in shooting on CTA Red Line train in Uptown

An Uptown woman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder for a shooting aboard a CTA Red Line train Wednesday morning.

Indya Smith, 23, is accused of shooting a 33-year-old passenger in the shoulder after spitting on him while arguing with him on the “L” train in Uptown around 8:40 a.m.

The victim was transported to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was in fair condition, police said.

Smith was also charged with aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon on the CTA. She was arrested by officers in the 5800 block of North Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood about 20 minutes after the shooting.

The shooting during rush hour Wednesday morning followed concerns about violent crime on CTA Mountain. A Tribune analysis from September, sparked by the fatal shooting of four people on the Blue Line on Labor Day, showed that reported violent crime on public transportation remained stubbornly above pre-pandemic levels.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday at the Leighton Criminal Court building.
