Wordle has been a sensation for over two years, continuing to challenge crossword enthusiasts on a daily basis.
Developed by Josh Wardle, a Brooklyn-based software engineer, the game was originally a gift for his girlfriend who loved crosswords. Initially intended for the couple to enjoy during lockdown, Wardle quickly recognized its broader appeal and launched Wordle online in October 2021.
WordleThe popularity of has skyrocketed in just a few months, going from 91 players in November 2021 to over 2 million in January 2022. This rapid growth has caught the attention of The New York Timeswho acquired the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.
Today, Wordle remains the site’s most popular crossword game. What accounts for its enduring success? Wardle attributes it to the game’s format, which consists of five-letter words and six riddles.

“There’s a reason why each word has five letters and you get six tries to guess it. It may seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries players were allowed,” he said. Newsweek in January 2022.
“Through this process of refinement, I realized that five letters and six essays was the sweet spot. It’s just narrow enough to feel like a challenge and make you think, but most of the time people can solve it. So you feel a real sense of accomplishment.”
