World Series News: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani injured in Game 2

Shohei Ohtani appeared to suffer an injury while sliding toward second base in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series, a potentially damaging blow for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they look to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Ohtani was caught stealing second base to end the inning, but was slow to get back up. He seemed to be in obvious pain.

Ohtani used his left hand to prepare for impact with the ground as he slid. According to MLB.com, he could be heard on the FOX broadcast saying in Japanese that the injury was to his left shoulder, before being escorted off the field by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and an athletic trainer.

It’s unclear how the injury will affect Ohtani, the Dodgers’ designated hitter and favorite for National League MVP, for the remainder of the Series.

Treinen replaced Michael Kopech needing three outs to record the save. Juan Soto immediately singled and, with one out, came around to score on an RBI single by Giancarlo Stanton to give New York its second run.

Anthony Rizzo walked to load the bases, but Treinen came back to strike out Anthony Volpe.

Alex Vesia was summoned from the bullpen to record the final out of the game, and he retired Jose Trevino on a fly ball on the only pitch he threw, effectively ending the game.

The victory brought the Dodgers halfway to their first championship in four years and left the Yankees desperate to win Game 3 Monday at Yankee Stadium.

Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up just one hit in 6.1 innings, allowing a solo homer to Soto for the Yankees’ first run.
