Currently, WWE has 10 championships that a wrestler can win.
This includes two men’s world championships, two women’s world championships, two men’s mid-card titles, two men’s tag team titles, one women’s tag team title and the WWE Speed Title defended exclusively on X.
While this may seem like a lot for the wrestlers on the roster to contend with, it’s difficult when the same small group of wrestlers continually wrestle and/or hold the same titles.
WWE really needs to create a new title for other wrestlers to grab onto. And one superstar has the perfect idea.
In a recent article on X, WWE Superstar Karrion Kross floated the idea of an extreme wrestling championship that would be decided by a tournament, similar to the King and Queen of the Ring.
“It would be awesome to have an extreme rules tournament right now in WWE to introduce a new extreme wrestling championship,” Kross said. “No rules. No disqualification. Pinfall, submission or knockout.”
When fans asked questions, Kross clarified that the tournament participants would be chosen by fan vote. Additionally, he thought it would be a great opportunity to air more programming when WWE Raw moves to Netflix.
This is reminiscent of the Hardcore Championship that was part of WWE and WCW in the late 90s and early 2000s. The conditions were similar, except it had to be defended 24/7.
Matches for this title would likely be similar to the style of hardcore matches popularized in the United States by Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).
While this is certainly an exciting idea and a way to incorporate some variety into the type of matches WWE offers throughout the year, there are other areas that need more attention.
Specifically, it would be great if WWE had a mid-card title for the women’s division.
Currently, WWE women’s wrestlers can only compete for three titles. Adding a secondary title similar to the United States Championship or Intercontinental Championship would provide another opportunity to tell a story in a division that seems to focus on the same group of wrestlers.
Even if a Women’s Sprint Championship is on the way, it will not have the same prestige as a Women’s Intercontinental Championship.
Still, it would be interesting to bring back a more extreme style of wrestling to WWE. Hopefully Triple H can avoid the disaster that was WWE’s version of ECW.
