On Sunday, the Yankees declined their $5 million club option on Lou Trivino, who is becoming a free agent.
The right-handed reliever arrived in the 2022 trade that also brought Frankie Montas to the Bronx, and neither has stayed healthy.
Trivino pitched well in 25 games after the trade – and appeared in four games in that year’s postseason and didn’t give up a run – but he hasn’t pitched in the majors since Game 3 of this season’s ALCS.
Trivino suffered a sprained elbow the following spring and ultimately required Tommy John surgery in May 2023.
The Yankees did not extend an offer to Trivino last offseason, but brought him back for less with a club option for 2025, which was declined after Trivino did not pitch this year.
The now 33-year-old suffered several setbacks and only began a rehabilitation mission in mid-August.
He pitched to a 4.91 ERA in 11 minor league games and was not recalled.
He will now join Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loaisiga and Tim Hill as former Yankees relievers on the open market.
