**Meet SVEXA
\
SVEXA is a human performance intelligence company combining expertise in physiology, precision health and data science with a deep understanding in technology, molecular profiling, and practical sports performance. Our founders are world leaders in physiological science, complemented with decades of experience coaching elite international athletes. We use proven science to unlock human potential by providing hyper-personalized, actionable insights that enable each individual to unlock their physical and mental potential.
Svexa is primarily B2B, serving customers ranging from sports technology, professional teams to the military, corporate health or general population wellness. In all of these situations, end users have potential that is hidden behind mental and physical barriers that can be removed with optimized data and practical solutions. We enable our clients to make their B2C products and apps more sticky, with true personalization and adaptivity. Our primary offering is algorithm licensing – plug-and-play into your existing technology. We also offer white-labeled software and consulting to help clients new to the use of human performance data.
What Sets Your Startup Apart From Other Healthcare Startups?
There are several things that set svexa apart. First, we don’t simply apply AI as a raw number-crunching tool, instead we combine it with proven science based on decades of real world experience. We are also different from most providers in that our proprietary algorithms integrate all relevant data sources to build truly individualized profiles of each person, including training response, biomarkers, sleep, subjective ratings, and psychology. Our team don’t just have the technical skills in software and analytics, but most also have personal experience in elite sports, coaching or physiology. This unique combination allows us to unlock human potential in a new way and provide hyper-personalized, actionable insights for readiness, training and day to day decision making. We deliver our insights either by software or by API, and work with a range of B2B clients ranging from sports tech, pro teams or elite athletes through to corporate, national or military.
What Have Been Your Proudest Accomplishments Thus Far?
We’re proud to have been nominated for and won a variety of awards and accolades, including winning Werder Bremen’s Innovation Lab, Science 4Football’s Startup Challenge and WorldFestival Startup Awards. We pride ourselves on our efficiency and bootstrapped our growth for a number of years, and more recently we’ve also been able to secure multiple rounds of investment funding, which feels like an achievement in the current environment! But beyond those, of course or biggest accomplishments have been completing our first suite of products and delivering them to clients; first our Readiness Advisor app, then Ellida endurance and Thrud strength training recommendation engines and more recently our Zone7 platform for team performance and risk management. We have delivered these to clients in the sports technology and recreational athletics environments, as well as to pro sports teams where we have demonstrated value through year on year results.
What Lessons Have You Learned?
We’ve learned so much, it’s hard to know where to begin. Thinking of the big lessons – it’s critically important to keep a clear vision of what you want to be. Scope creep and distraction is a real risk every day. Founders of course should be in continual discussion and reevaluation of what they’re doing, but at the same time they must quickly deliver to market. In the startup world, done is better than perfect – get it out there fast, learn from feedback and iterate. Having the right people around you is also vital – as a startup grows, everyone must embrace the spirit of continual change and flexibility, plug gaps and move fast while always retaining the central vision in their mind.
At svexa we took great care to hire people not just with the necessary technical skills but also domain knowledge or high level experience in sports, as they know how real people will apply our insights in the real world. We kept our organization light and nimble, watching every penny and only spending where we needed to – keeping the burn rate as low as possible is the smart and responsible thing to do, but still seems surprisingly rare in startup land. As much as ‘culture’ is a buzzword, it’s important even for early startups to establish what it means for them – what sort of company do they want to be, how will they interact internally and externally. Addressing these things explicitly allowed us to stay focused on our goals.
Why Did You Decide to Participate in HackerNoon’s Startups of The Year Event? What Would It Mean For Your Startup if You Won?
We are very proud of what we’ve achieved, feel like svexa is genuinely a force for good in the field of human performance and health. So we’re happy to share our work in case it helps others in their startup endeavors. Similarly we’re always looking around to see what we can learn from other startups and founders, so HackerNoon provides a valuable resource in that regard. This event is a great way to recognize each other.
What Future Plans Do You Have for Your Healthcare Startup? Where Do You See it in 3-4 Years?
We have a long list of ‘to dos’ for extending our product capabilities, as our Science team continually deliver new studies highlighting innovative ways we can gather and analyse human performance data. Naturally we will continue to expand our portfolio to cover additional sports and related activities. We have already extended our work to concierge medical, military and eSports applications. In the next few years we will be engaging with wider sectors including corporate health and general population wellness for entire countries, demonstrating how our algorithms can deliver improved human performance in any scenario.
How Has the Healthcare Sector Changed in Recent Years? How Do You Believe It Will Change in the Future?
The broad challenge for everyone involved in sports and health is what to do with all the data they gather. Whether they are individual elite athletes, coaches, professional teams or everyday recreational players, any one of us can simply strap on a watch or wear a ring and install an app to be presented with myriad different metrics, charts, thresholds etc. It can be overwhelming to try and figure out – where should I look, what is most important for me, what should I change in my training to improve my performance? Up until now, typically each of the hardware providers will offer their interpretation of the data from their device, and they may offer recommendations for training or injury prevention and so on. However, the two big things they are failing to do is 1) combine all available data sources for the individual, to provide a single holistic picture, and 2) deliver truly hyper-personalized insights based on that holistic picture.
The big change in future years will be the shift from simply capturing and displaying data to truly integrating and interpreting it in a useful way.Svexa aims to lead exactly this change – we are agnostic to the source of data, the first step in our data pipeline is to integrate all available sources and harmonize them by recalculating fundamental metrics like load from the raw underlying data capture. With that powerful combined data set in place, we can build a Digital Twin of the individual that identifies, from all the thousands of possibilities, which are the specific metrics or correlations that best determine how that individual will perform or recover. With that, we can then simulate thousands of possible regimes to determine precisely what is best for them. Slightly different applications of our algorithms can flag when injury or overtraining is likely, or predict the outcome of upcoming milestone events, for example we have predicted elite athlete results in major tournaments in several sports with error of less than 0.5%.
Any Closing Words?
Svexa’s fundamental vision is to that any individual should be able to unlock the full potential of their health and performance data. Using this data svexa is uniquely able to provide them with personalized guidance on what to do, in any scenario on any day. We want to democratize the value in the data, and allow each of us to control our own data and insights as we progress through our lives. We genuinely believe we can deliver good results for people all around the world, and very much appreciate your votes in the 2024 Startups of The Year Awards.
